PNG to SVG Tracer

Image to DXF converter

Convert a picture into a DXF of closed outlines. PNG, JPG, WebP, GIF and BMP all work. Set the size in millimeters, preview the cut lines, and download.

How to use it

  1. Add an image from your computer, or paste one from the clipboard.
  2. Choose black and white for cutting, or a color style if you want one layer per color.
  3. Set the output width in millimeters and adjust the threshold while you watch the red cut lines.
  4. Download the DXF. Download the SVG too if you want a copy to edit.

From picture to outline

CAD programs and cutting machines work with lines, not pixels, so an image has to be traced first. This tool finds the edge of every dark shape, then writes each edge to the DXF as a closed polyline at the size you choose.

The black and white style is the one to use for cutting and engraving outlines. It makes a single layer with no duplicate edges. The color styles make one layer per color, which is useful for reference or for separating parts by color, but where two colors touch they both draw the same edge.

Getting the best result from your source

Strong contrast and clean edges matter more than resolution. A crisp 800-pixel logo traces better than a soft 4000-pixel photo. If the source is poor, fix it first: crop away borders, straighten the page, and flatten uneven lighting in an image editor.

What the settings do

Style
Black and white is best for cutting. Logo and illustration styles keep colors and write one DXF layer per color if you ask for it.
Output width (mm)
The finished width of the drawing in millimeters.
Layers
Available in the color styles. Choose a single layer or one per color.
Threshold, smoothing and specks
Together these decide which edges are kept and how smooth they are.

What people use it for

  • Preparing artwork for laser engravers, routers and plasma tables
  • Making decals, templates and stencils
  • Importing a sketch outline into CAD as a starting shape
  • Producing both a DXF and an SVG from one source image

Questions

Can a DXF contain the image itself?

This tool writes outlines only. The DXF will not contain the picture, its colors or its shading. Some CAD programs can attach a picture as a reference underlay, which is a separate step.

Why did my shapes come out as outlines only?

DXF stores lines. Whether a closed outline is cut, engraved or filled is decided in your CAM or laser software.

What image size works best?

Between 800 and 1600 pixels on the longest side is plenty. Larger images are scaled down to 1600 pixels for tracing, and small ones are scaled up first.

Is my file uploaded anywhere?

No. Tracing and file creation happen in your browser, using code that is part of this page. Your image is not sent to a server. You can check this in your browser's network tab while you use the tool.
