How to use it
- Drop in an .svg file.
- Leave the defaults on, or lower number precision for a smaller file.
- Check the preview and the size saved.
- Download the optimized SVG.
What gets removed
Design tools save a lot of extra data in an SVG: editor settings, metadata, comments, empty groups and ids nobody uses. None of it affects how the picture looks. Coordinates are often stored with six or more decimal places, which is far more precision than a screen can show.
Removing that data and rounding the numbers shrinks most exported SVGs by a good margin. Traced SVGs benefit from the number rounding most.
How low can precision go
Two decimal places is safe for almost everything. One works for most logos. Zero can visibly distort small details. Watch the preview as you lower it, and stop when edges start to change.
Files that contain text keep their whitespace, so the text does not shift.
What the settings do
- Number precision
- How many decimals are kept in paths, points and sizes.
- Remove metadata and editor data
- Drops comments, metadata, titles and settings left by Inkscape, Illustrator and similar tools.
- Remove unused ids
- Deletes ids that nothing refers to. Ids that are used stay.
- Remove extra whitespace
- Collapses spaces and line breaks between elements.
What people use it for
- Making website graphics load faster
- Shrinking traced SVGs
- Cleaning an SVG before sending it to a client
- Preparing icons for an app
Questions
Will it change how my SVG looks?
Not at the default settings. Lowering precision a lot can change small details, so check the preview.
Does it work on traced SVGs?
Yes, and they usually shrink the most because their paths use long numbers.
Does it merge or simplify paths?
No. It removes extra data and rounds numbers. It does not redraw your shapes. To get fewer shapes, lower the color count in the SVG tracer.
Is my file uploaded anywhere?
No. Tracing and file creation happen in your browser, using code that is part of this page. Your image is not sent to a server. You can check this in your browser's network tab while you use the tool.
